How Do You Stop Static Hair in Winter? A Utah Family's Answer

Static hair in winter? Here's what helps. Maralea Sun Sea Scape Citrus Mist sulfate-free shampoo

To stop static hair in winter, put moisture back and cut down on friction: wash with a gentle sulfate-free shampoo, condition every time you wash, pat your hair dry instead of rubbing it, and keep a damp hand or a dab of conditioner ready for flyaways. Static shows up when dry hair meets dry air, so most of the fix is keeping your hair from drying out in the first place.

We live in Washington, Utah, where the winter air is so dry that pulling off a sweater can turn you into a walking lightning rod. Our family has been in the hair business for 80 years, starting with Debbie's grandmother's salon, and "why is my hair sticking to my face?" is a question we hear every single winter. Here's what we tell friends and neighbors.

Why does my hair get so staticky in winter?

Static is an electric charge. When two things rub together, like a beanie and your hair, tiny charges move from one to the other. Moisture normally lets that charge drain away. In winter, cold air holds less water, and the heater dries your house out even more. Dry hair plus dry air means the charge has nowhere to go, so your strands push away from each other and cling to everything else.

Your routine can make it better or worse. Anything that strips your hair of its natural oils leaves it drier and more likely to fly away.

Does sulfate-free shampoo help with static hair?

It can. Many shampoos use strong sulfate cleansers that make big foam and wash away a lot of your hair's natural oils. In a dry winter, that leaves strands rougher and more likely to hold a charge. A sulfate-free shampoo cleans with less foam and is gentler on those oils.

That's one reason Sea Scape Shampoo is sulfate-free. If you're switching from a high-foam shampoo, expect fewer suds. That's normal. Our post on why suds don't equal clean explains what to expect in the first couple of weeks.

Should I use conditioner every time I wash in winter?

Yes. Conditioner smooths the outside of each strand, which means less friction and less static. Don't skip it in winter, even if your hair is fine. Use a little near the roots and more on the ends, where hair is oldest and driest.

Sea Scape Conditioner is silicone-free and made with Irish sea moss, so it rinses clean without stacking up wash after wash. (Curious about silicones? We wrote a whole post on them.) A little goes a long way: in our house, two of us wash every day and a 12 oz bottle lasts us about 4 to 6 months.

What are quick fixes for static hair?

  • Damp hands. Run slightly damp hands over the flyaways. A pea-sized dab of conditioner works too.
  • Pat, don't rub. Rubbing with a towel builds friction. Squeeze and pat instead.
  • Change your comb. Plastic combs tend to build up charge. A wooden comb or a natural-bristle brush is calmer.
  • Fix the hat, not just the hair. Cotton, or a beanie lined with silk or satin, causes less static than wool or acrylic. Wiping a dryer sheet over the outside of your hat helps too.
  • Run a humidifier. Even one in the bedroom at night makes a difference.
  • Finish cool. End your blow-dry on the cool setting.

How often should I wash my hair in winter?

As often as your hair needs, with a shampoo that isn't harsh. If your scalp gets oily fast, keep washing daily with a gentle formula. If your ends feel like straw by February, try skipping a day between washes and see how your hair responds. There's no single right answer, but there is a wrong one: scrubbing with a stripping shampoo every day in the driest months of the year.

Which Sea Scape scent is best for winter?

Either one. Both scents are the same formula, and only the scent is different. Citrus Mist has a light citrus scent that some of us appreciate on a gray January morning. Unscented has no added scent, for anyone who'd rather skip it. The Citrus Mist shampoo and conditioner set is $61 and ships free, and so does the Unscented set.

Who makes Sea Scape?

We do. Maralea Sun is Dave and Debbie's family business in Washington, Utah. The formula traces back to Debbie's father, who worked in her grandmother's salon and went on to own Hairitage College of Beauty, Hairitage Magazine and his own hair products. (Yes, Hairitage with "hair." The family has always liked a good pun.) Sea Scape was developed with and is made by a manufacturer in Sandy, Utah, only for us. It's not imported and it's not someone else's product with our label on it.

Every order comes with our 30-day guarantee, and shipping is free on orders over $50.

Stay warm, stay un-zapped, and if the beanie wins this round, there's always tomorrow.
